.:DS Night / July 17-18, 2006:.
Unfourtunately, nobody was able to attend other than my Sister (Esuna) and I. So, in lieu of the Tortellonie, we prepared some vegetables and ate them with some great Nacho Cheese that has some Jalepeno flavoring and bits. Very delightful! Alas, in previous meets, we have been working on getting the WiFi to work with DS Linux. It has been a great struggle, and we have been working dilligently at the house of my friend, and trying to make it right. However, we have been having troubles. My friend owns a LinkSys wireless router, and he was only able to get connected when disabling WEP. Thinking it was something on the DS Linux end, we troubleshooted that to no end. Finally, we got down to equiptment error, however, the night had come to an end, so the router was not tested as it should have been.

So, I decided to use my rescources for tonight's gathering, which did not prove to be very large at all. Either way, I have a different brand wireless router, a NetGear, so I figured it would change things up a little. It did the trick. Not the LinkSys router, but the changes I made. Allow me to list the specs that worked.
  • ---WirelessInfo---
  • Standard: 802.11b
  • SSID: TEMP Brodcast: On
  • Channel: 1
  • Encryption: WEP
  • Authentication: Shared
  • Strength: 128-Bit
  • Type: Hexadecimal
  • Key#: 1
  • Key: 11111111111111111111111111
  • ---RouterInfo---
  • RouterIP: 192.168.1.254
  • DHCP: No
  • ---NDS_Settings---
  • IP:192.168.1.2
  • FlashCardSystem: SuperCard SD
  • SD_Card: 2 GB PQI
OK, that is about all the important hardware configuration. Now, for the commands used to set up the Nintendo DS to connect to my wireless router with my settings, I looked up information in the Forums at DS Linux.org and basically followed their instructions, modifying as needed. So, I entered, right after booting it up:
  • login: root
  • password: uClinux
  • # iwconfig nds channel 1 essid TEMP key 11111111111111111111111111
  • # ifconfig nds 192.168.1.2 up
  • # route add default gw 192.168.1.254
  • # ping 192.168.1.254   (Router)
  • 192.168.1.254 is alive!
  • # ping 66.94.234.13   (Yahoo)
  • 66.94.234.13 is alive!
  • # retawq   (loads the text browser)
  • g   (to load a URL)
  • http://72.14.207.99/   (Loaded successfuly / Google)
If you look closely, you will see that I have the default root login, then I set up the wireless to connect to my router, giving it the specifics. Then, I had to tell DS Linux to connect to the network, using the given IP and also using "up" to turn the wireless on. After that, adding the router is mandatory to make things go through the router before they hit the internet, and then I began to ping. Started with the router, just to test the wireless, and then Yahoo to test connectivity with the world. Worked great! Loaded retawq to test browsing, and loaded Google with no trouble! Fast, too!       An important note to make: I could not get connected if I changed Authentication from Shared to Open. It refused to connect. Also, when changing the Authentication from Open back to Shared, I had to reboot to make it work. Re-entering the settings did not update properly. I am guessing I would have had to bring the adapter down, disabling wireless, then bring it up again. I did not. So, in short, our lesson this night was: Change Authentication to Shared.       As you will note, I used IP addresses for everything. Right after entering the "route add default gw 192.168.1.254" - I should have been able to add the line, "echo "nameserver 192.168.1.254" > /etc/resolv.conf" to get my DNS working, and use things like yahoo.com and google.com, however, I am using the SuperCard SD, and the drivers to read and write to the card are not implemented on my system. Not sure if they have been added to the new builds, but I look forward to them. Anyway, because of this, I got an error claiming I could not create a file. So, I just skipped it and did full-on IP address usage.       Well, that concludes our night of DS fun. I am going to poweroff my little navy blue DS Lite, and get some rest. The sun is coming up.
